It's confusing that the database must be configured to use a Server Parameter File (spfile), yet the parameter "LOG_ARCHIVE_START" cannot be set in an spfile, only in a text Initialization Parameter File (pfile). How do you set automatic archiving when you're using a spfile without scripting it somewhere?

You can set the LOG_ARCHIVE_START in SPFILE also.

ALTER SYSTEM SET LOG_ARCHIVE_START=TRUE SCOPE=SPFILE;
and
Bounce the instance.

Thanks! My confusion arose from an entry in the Online Data Guard Concepts and Administration Handbook, Parameters section at:

http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96653/init_params.htm#78605

where it explicitly states "You cannot specify this parameter in a server parameter file." Glad to see you can.
